RSV_Influenza AB

The RSV and Influenza test detects the presence of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Influenza A, and Influenza B antigens using a rapid nasal swab. Identifying which virus is causing your symptoms allows for targeted treatment and helps prevent unnecessary antibiotics. Results are typically available in around 15 minutes.

Who Should Get Tested?

RSV causes around 30,000 hospitalisations of children under 5 each year in the UK, while influenza A accounts for 75% of flu cases and tends to be more severe. You should consider testing if you experience sudden high fever with chills, persistent cough, severe body aches, sore throat, headache, or wheezing. Testing is particularly important for young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and anyone with a weakened immune system or chronic respiratory condition, as early identification can prevent complications like pneumonia or bronchiolitis.

Understanding Your Results

Result	What It Means
RSV Positive	RSV infection detected. Rest, fluids, and symptom management recommended. Seek medical attention if breathing difficulties develop.
Influenza A Positive	Flu A detected. Antiviral treatment (e.g. oseltamivir) may be offered within 48 hours of symptom onset to reduce severity.
Influenza B Positive	Flu B detected. Generally milder than Flu A. Rest and symptomatic treatment usually sufficient.
Negative	No RSV or Influenza detected. Symptoms may be caused by another respiratory virus or bacterial infection.

Early testing allows you to isolate if positive, reducing the risk of spreading the infection to vulnerable people around you. Your clinic team will advise on treatment and when to seek further medical attention.
