Testosterone
The Testosterone test measures the level of testosterone in your blood, the primary male sex hormone that also plays an important role in female health. Testosterone is responsible for muscle mass, bone density, body hair, libido, and mood in men, and contributes to ovarian function, bone strength, and energy levels in women. A blood sample is usually taken in the morning when levels are at their highest.
Who Should Get Tested?
Testosterone levels naturally decline with age, but abnormal levels can affect people of any age. In men, you should consider testing if you experience low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, reduced muscle mass, fatigue, mood changes, or infertility. In women, symptoms such as excessive facial or body hair, acne, hair thinning, or irregular periods may indicate elevated testosterone linked to conditions like PCOS. Testosterone testing is also used to monitor gender-affirming hormone therapy and evaluate early or delayed puberty in children.

Female normal ranges are significantly lower (0.7 to 2.4 nmol/L for ages 18 to 29). Your clinic team will interpret your result based on your age, gender, symptoms, and health goals.
