HbA1c ( Diabetes )

The HbA1c test measures your glycated haemoglobin, the percentage of haemoglobin in your red blood cells that has glucose attached to it. Because red blood cells live for around 2 to 3 months, this single test gives a reliable picture of your average blood sugar levels over that period, beyond the day-to-day fluctuations a standard glucose test would show. No fasting or preparation is needed.

Who Should Get Tested?

In the UK, over 12 million people are living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, and someone is diagnosed every 3 minutes. Many do not realise that high blood sugar can silently damage the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves long before symptoms appear. You should consider an HbA1c test if you experience persistent thirst, frequent urination (especially at night), unexplained tiredness, weight loss without changes to diet, slow-healing wounds, or blurred vision. Those with a family history of diabetes, a BMI over 25, or a sedentary lifestyle are also at higher risk.

Understanding Your Results

HbA1c Level	Percentage	Status
Below 42 mmol/mol	Below 6%	Normal healthy blood sugar control. Maintain a balanced lifestyle.
42 to 47 mmol/mol	6% to 6.4%	Pre-diabetic elevated risk. Lifestyle changes can reverse this. Retest in 3 to 6 months.
48 mmol/mol or above	6.5% or above	Diabetic range requires a confirmatory lab test and GP consultation.

If your result falls in the pre-diabetic range, simple changes to diet, exercise and weight can often bring your levels back to normal without medication. Your clinic team will explain your results and advise on next steps.
