TSH ( Thyroid )
The TSH test measures thyroid-stimulating hormone, produced by the pituitary gland to regulate your thyroid. TSH levels indicate whether your thyroid is producing the right amount of hormones to control metabolism, energy levels, heart rate, and body temperature. High TSH suggests an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), while low TSH indicates an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). No fasting is required.
Who Should Get Tested?
Underactive thyroid affects 15 in 1,000 women and 1 in 1,000 men in the UK. You should consider a TSH test if you experience unexplained fatigue, weight gain or loss, sensitivity to cold or heat, mood changes (depression, anxiety, or irritability), dry skin, thinning hair, constipation, irregular heartbeat, or changes in menstrual periods. Those already on thyroid medication should test regularly to ensure their dosage is correct.
Understanding Your Results
| TSH Level | Status |
|---|---|
| Below 0.4 mU/L | Low suggests overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). Further investigation recommended. |
| 0.4 to 4.0 mU/L | Normal thyroid function is within healthy range. |
| Above 4.0 mU/L | High suggests underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). GP referral advised. |
A single TSH test provides a reliable snapshot of thyroid function. Your clinic team will explain your result and, if levels are abnormal, may recommend further thyroid hormone testing (T3 and T4) or referral to your GP.
